OHTF Lady Eagles Win Two Sectional Events & Advance in 6 to Regional – Team Takes Runner Up Honors

The OHTF Lady Eagles finished a respectable 2nd at Tuesday’s 14 school IHSAA Marion Sectional with 78.5 points. The Lady Eagles who entered the meet as the defending Champions managed to win two events and qualifiy athletes to the IHSAA Fort Wayne Regional in 6 events. Norwell won the team title with 134 points while the Lady Eagles just got by county and conference foes Eastbrook, Frankton, and Marion who went 3-4-5.

Knowing that upsetting Norwell was going to be a daunting task the Lady Eagles entered athletes in only 14 of the 16 events, scratching many athletes from events in an attempt to better their chances of individual success and possible Regional Qualifications. In all the Lady Eagles scored in 12 of the 14 events they did enter athletes in.

Sophomore Ellie Campbell and Freshman Biruk Travis earned the 2 Individual Sectional Championships on the night for the Lady Eagles. Both Campbell and Travis entered Tuesday as the #1 seed in their respective event and left little to chance in earning the wins.

Campbell matched her season best in the Long Jump, popping a 16-6 to win the event. Again that distance ranks her 3rd all time in OHTF Program History. Of her 6 jumps Campbell surpassed 16 feet on 5 of them while 2nd place was 16-1.

Travis earned a win in the 3200 Meter Run in a time of 12:17 nearly 20 seconds ahead of 2nd place. While it was not a personal best for Travis it was within 10 seconds and the Freshman was coming off a Runner Up finish in the 1600 Meter Run earlier in the night making her the only multi event individual Regional Qualifier for the Lady Eagles.

Lady Eagle Junior Leah Highley and Senior Lauren Rex earned the other 2 individual Regional Qualifying spots by placing in the Top 3 in their respective events. Highley was Runner Up in the 400 Meter Dash in a time of 1:00 just missing her season best. Rex, who was outside the qualifying spots for the majority of the competition in the Shot Put set a personal best of over 2 feet on her last attempt to finish 3rd and punch her ticket to the Regional. Rex’s toss of 33-6.25 is the 7th best throw in OHTF Program History by a Lady Eagle.

Highley and Campbell were multi event Regional Qualifiers as they paired up with two Lady Eagle Freshmen Audrey Rex and Lexi Nuber to finish Runner Up in the 4×400 Meter Relay in a new season best time of 4:16. The foursome dropped over 7 seconds off their season best to take 2nd and their time ranks 9th best in OHTF Program History.

Other Lady Eagle athletes that placed / scored (Top 8) on Tuesday night were Freshman Amelia McClain and Sophomore Abby Sneed who just missed qualifying taking 4th and 5th in the Pole Vault. Nuber added a season best and Top 10 All Time OHTF Lady Eagles mark in the 300 Meter Hurdles to finish 5th. Sophomore Jennessa Shields earned a strong 5th Place finish in the Shot Put. Sophomore Newcomer Bella Taylor ran to a strong 5th in the 100 Meter Hurdles after fighting to make the final in the event. Senior Kate Thompson was running in the Top 4 before clipping a hurdle and falling to the track.

Lauren Rex added a 6th in the Discus. The 4×800 Meter Relay running mainly alternates finished 6th nearly matching a season best time. Team members were Freshmen Sophia Rowland and Lydia Trexler along with Sophomore Audrey Woodard, and Junior Evelin Perez. Rowland and Junior Ruth Tripp both put points on the board in the High Jump tieing for 7th.

Lauren Rex, Ellie Campbell, Biruk Travis, and the rest of the 4×400 Meter Relay compete next Tuesday May 23rd in the IHSAA Fort Wayne Carroll Regional. The Top 3 finishers in that event will advance to the 2023 IHSAA State Finals.
