OHTF Golden Eagles Win Their 4th Straight Sectional Championship – Advancing 12 Individuals & 2 Relays to Regional – Sweet Wins 3 Events

The OHTF Golden Eagles used a late surge in events Thursday to outscore a very talented and favored Norwell (Northeast 8 Conference Champions) squad 136-116 to win their 4th straight IHSAA Marion Sectional. Marion, Wabash, and Mississinewa rounded out the Top 5. The title is the 10th in program history and the 7th the last 11 completed seasons for the men. The streak goes back to 2019 prior to the lost Covid season in 2020.

In all, the Golden Eagles advanced to next week’s IHSAA Fort Wayne Carroll Regional in 2 Relays and qualified 12 in individual events. The Golden Eagles advanced athletes in 9 of the 16 events and scored in all but 2 events.

Junior Trenton Sweet led the way as he collected or was part of all 3 of the team’s 1st Place Finishes. Sweet took top honors in the 1600 Meter Run and 3200 Meter Run while also anchoring the 4×800 Meter Relay to a win and season best 8:07. Joining Sweet on the relay was classmate Owen Jackson alsong with Senior Landon Biegel and Sophomore Lance Wyrick. Sweet, Jackson, and Biegel were all State Qualifiers in the event a year ago.

Jackson, Biegel, and Wyrick were also big in their other events as Jackson took two 2nds both in the 1600 behind Sweet and in the 800 Meter Run. Biegel put points on the board in High Jump while also setting a season best in the open 400 Meter Dash to place 3rd and anchoring the 4×400 Meter Relay from behind to a Runner Up Finish. Joining Biegel on the Regional Qualifying relay was classmate Caleb Kroll along with Junior Levi Trexler and Sophomore Morshown Cotton.

Wyrick posted a season best and 3rd place finish in the 800 behind Jackson while Junior Toby Sneed helped round out the huge points from the endurance events with a Runner Up finish to Sweet in the 3200.

Kroll put points on the board in the 400 Meter Dash behind Biegel as well along with going 5-6 in the Long Jump with classmate Kyle Turanchick.

The throws and pole vault were both very important areas for the Golden Eagles as well. In the Shot Put and Discus all three OHTF throwers earned Regional Qualifying spots as Senior Wyatt Strange and Junior Tai Johnson went 2-3 in the Disc and with Senior Silas Jones posting a 3rd in SP. The Golden Eagles also posted a strong 2-3 finish in the PV with Junior Nate Brower taking 2nd and Senior Grant Elzinga coming in 3rd.

The 4×100 Meter Relay team of Turanchick, Trexler, Cotton, and Senior Lucas Hasty exceeded their seed to score important points in 5th. Hasty and Sophomore Drew Elzinga scored points in the Hurdle Events with Hasty posting two additional 5th place finishes respectively.

The Top 3 Finishers in each event at the Sectional Round advance to the Regional round one step away from the IHSAA State Finals.
