Lady Knights Capture Volleyball Regional

After sweeping Blue River Valley in the first match the Southwood VolleyKnights defeated 30-3 Faith Christian 25-18, 25-13, 23-25, 26-24 Saturday to capture the regional title at Southwood.

In the championship the Knights got off to a hot start, grabbing a 6-1 lead off kills from Shania Rhamy and two aces from Carly Whitesel. Faith Christain would come back and eventually take an 8-7 lead before the Knights went to work. Alexis Lopez would record a kill that ignited a 7-3 run to give Southwood a 14-11 lead. Ties at 16 Rhamy went to work at the net along with Grace Drake to win the first set 25-18.

Drake would go on a killing spree to start the second set along with Lopez and Hali Pershing for a 15-12 lead. With Allie Haecker serving aces the Knights would score 7 straight and go on to win the second set 25-13.

The Knights looked as though they were going to run away for a sweep in the third set, grabbing an 11-6 lead before Faith Christian found another gear to score 7 straight and grab a 13-12 lead. The set would go back and forth, but the Knights couldn’t get over the hump and fell 23-25 for a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth set the Knights were leading 12-11 when Pershing and Drake went off to build a 20-11 lead. Faith Christian would regroup and claw their way back, eventually tying the score at 24. Quinn Claussen would then record a block before Rhamy pounded the final point for a 26-24 fourth set win and a regional championship.

The Knights will now play in the semi state next Saturday against defending state champion Blackhawk Christain at Huntington at 1:00.
