15 Tigers fall to Fort Wayne Southside in OT 74-72

Peru traveled to 4A Fort Wayne Southside High School for the first meeting with the Archers since the 96-97 season.

The game started as a back-and-forth battle between the teams as neither one pulled ahead by very many points, which led to the Archers taking a 2-point lead after the 1st Quarter and the Tigers knotting the score up the half.

The Tigers picked it up on defense in the 3rd quarter and knocked down several shots to take a 9-point lead heading into the 4th quarter.

The Tigers opened their lead to 12 after Reis Bellar knocked in a 3-pointer on the first possession of the quarter. Southside then used their athleticism to claw their way back into the game and were able to knot it up at the end of the 4th.

Overtime was just like the rest of the game, tight, back-and-forth contest. Peru took the lead by 1 after Gavin Eldridge knocked in 2 free throws with 1:08 left on the clock. Southside retook the lead on the next possession with around 45 seconds to go. Xavier Turner put the Tigers back in front by 1 with a rebound and a putback with 24 seconds remaining. Southside took the ball down the floor and missed the next shot, secured the offensive rebound, and found DeMarcus Barr all alone outside the arc, where he broke Peru’s heart with a 3-point dagger with 3.2 seconds left. Peru tried to throw a long inbound pass that was stolen by the Archers, 2 missed free throws later, and another attempted full-court heave with 1.2 left on the clock was blocked and taken by Southside to end the game.

This brings the Tigers record to 3-2(2-0 TRC), they are back on the court on Friday night around 7:45 pm when they play host to the Tippy Valley Vikings at Tigerena.
