Tigers outlast Culver Academies 56-54

Peru hosted the Culver Acadmies Eagles on Tuesday evening.

The game started rather sluggish and sloppy as there were 10 combined turnovers in the opening quarter. The teams traded baskets and the game was knotted up at 14 after 1.

The Tigers then battled some foul trouble in the 2nd quarter. Senior Ian Potts and Junior Gavin Eldridge buried a 3-pointer a piece that was huge in keeping the Tigers within striking distance as they went into the break trailing by 2.

The 3rd quarter was another back and forth quarter as neither team lead by more than a couple of buckets. The Tigers ended the 3rd quarter still down by 2.

The 4th quarter saw the teams match each other for a couple of minutes. Potts buried another huge 3-pointer that cut the deficit back to 2 and seemed to be the jumpstart the Tigers needed as the Tigers outscored the Eagles 10-6 over the remaining 5:20 of the game. The Tigers had a chance to put the game away with just seconds remaining but an uncharacteristic night of free throw shooting(2-9) gave Culver the ball with less than 13 seconds remaining. The Eagles got an open look from the corner, but the shot was just off and caromed off the rim as the buzzer sounded, to avoid the same fate as our Lady Tiger counterparts who lost to Culver on a buzzer-beater back in November.

The win moves the Tigers to 9-7(4-1 TRC). They are back in action at Whitko High School in a TRC matchup, with the Tigers looking to stay just a game behind conference leader Manchester.

Scoring –

Matthew Roettger – 16

Alex Ross – 14

Gavin Eldridge – 13

Ian Potts – 8

Xavier Turner – 5
