Tigers rally from 7 points down to beat Rochester 72-64

The Tigers hosted Rochester on a cold and snowy Friday Evening in a TRC showdown.

While the temperature outside may have been cold, the teams in the gym came out white hot. They combined for 44 points in the first quarter. The Tigers were led by Seniors Alex Ross and Matthew Roettger who tallied 15 of the Tigers’ 20 points. The Zebras however used 4 turnovers by Peru to score 24 of their own, on the strength of 4 made 3-pointers.

The Tigers’ struggles with ball control continued in the second stanza as they committed another 7 turnovers. Rochester however only made 4 shots in the frame, all 3 pointers, and 2 free throws, only outscoring Peru by 3 to take a 7-point advantage into the locker room at half.

The Tigers came out of the break on a mission. They ramped up their defensive effort allowing only 6 points in the quarter. Peru worked their offensive sets with great ball movement and was able to convert 19 team points, on the backs of Ross, Roettger, and Junior Gavin Eldridge. Sophomore Reis Bellar scored in the quarter as well. The Tigers led by 6 entering the final quarter.

The 4th quarter saw a repeat of the JV game. Rochester tried to mount a comeback attempt, but the Tigers converted 11-15 from the free-throw line to seal the victory. With a little over 5:20 left in the game, Eldridge made his 68th 3-pointer breaking the single-season record held by Tyler Murphy(’16).

The victory improves the Tigers record to 12-9(5-3 TRC). They are back in action on Friday night in the final regular season game against Wabash in a TRC battle. It will also be Senior night, so we will be saying farewell to Alex Ross, Matthew Roettger, Ian Potts, and Manager Colin Sensel.
