Death Valley Vetoes the Governors 35-23

Death Valley picked up their 3rd win of the season after defeating 5A Hammond Morton 35-23. Its been 25 years since the Vikings faced a 5A school and they made sure to take care of business.

Long methodical drives were the name of the game for Valley the whole night. The Vikings found the endzone early in the game when Wes Parker found an open gap and took it to the house on a 47 yard run. Gage Overbey made it 7-0 in just the first few minutes of the game. Morton put up a field goal at the end of the 1st to make it 7-3.

The 2nd quarter saw Valley answer back with a long drive that ended with a Brandon Styles 1 yard rushing TD and an Overbey extra point. Morton was able to answer back with a passing touchdown to make it 14-10. The Wrecking Crew defense had to tighten the straps for a last minute stand to end the half after a Valley fumble.

After the Homecoming festivities were completed, Valley put together another methodical drive which ended with Asher McGriff picking up a fumbled snap and hightailed it to the endzone for the rare lineman score. Morton was able to answer back shortly after to make it 21-17. But thats the closest the Governors would get to the Death Valley lead. Grady Moriarty was able to close out the 3rd quarter with a 6 yard rushing TD followed by the Overbey PAT to make it 28-17 at the end of the 3rd.

The Governors were able to answer back as they had been all night, this time with a 30 yard passing TD. The failed 2pt attempt was the last scoring opportunity Morton would have and the Wrecking Crew held them for the rest of the game. The Vikings were not done however and decided to put the final nail in the coffin with a 21 yard rushing TD from Brock Derf followed by the Overbey PAT to make the final score 35-23.

The ground game was on fire this game as Valley racked up 410 total rushing yards which also saw five different Vikings find the endzone. Wes Parker had 118 yards. Brock Derf had 96 yards. Grady Moriarty put up 82 yards. Brandon Stiles ran for 54 yards. Hunter Stage put up 30 yards. And Asher McGriffs fumble recovery went for 30 yards.

Defensively, the Wrecking Crew held the Governors to 114 yards rushing and 226 yards passing. The secondary and linebackers were attacked most of the night but were able to hold Morton to 19 completions on 29 attempts.

The Death Valley Road Show begins next week as the Vikings start conference play in the brand new Indiana Northern State Conference. Valley travels to Knox to take on the Redskins and Coach Radke with kickoff set for 7:30 ET/6:30 CT.
