The Wabash Apaches football team held aa 18 point lead with 8:33 left in the game before holding on to defeat Southwood 40-38 .
Wabash would jump out to a 6-0 lead on a Hayden McWhirt 1yd run before Southwood answered when Owen Enyeart took the insuing kickoff back 85yds A two point play to Maddux Marshal gave the Knights an 8-7 lead after one.
The Apaches would strike quickly in the second when McWhirt found Devon Osborne on a 31yd pass play to make it 12-8 Wabash. The Knights would finally have their first offensive possession of the game when Osborne picked off a pass. The Apaches would drive the field with Baldwin scoring from 3yds out to grab an 18-8 lead. Southwood would answer when Chambers hooked up with Coan Holloway from 56yds away to make it 18-14. Wabash would have one more answer in the half when Baldwin scored for a second time from 30yds away to give the Apaches a 26-14 lead at the half.
The Knights would get the ball to start the third quarter and march down the field with Chambers hitting Enyeart from 15yds out to make it 26-22 with 8:48 left in the quarter. The Apaches would go right back to their workhorse with Baldwin scoring from 9yds away to give Wabash a 34-22 lead with a quarter to go.
Wabash would extend their lead to 40-22 when Baldwin scored a fourth time from 5yds out with 8:33 to play. The Knights would regroup and make a comeback run, getting a 16yd and 11yd touchdown runs from Marshall to make it40-38 with 1:13 on the clock. The Knights would then serve the onside kick with a dogpile wrestling for the ball. After much debate by the officials, Wabash was awarded the ball by rule. If a player from each team has the ball it is considered a tie and the receiving team gets the ball. The Knights were out of timeouts, so the Apaches needed just one first down to secure the win and wasted no time giving the ball to Baldwin and run out the clock.
