Lady Norse Hold Off Knights Comeback

The Southwood and Northfield girls basketball team hooked up for a TRC and Metro showdown Friday, with the Norse hanging on for a 57-45 win.

Each team would control parts of the first quarter with Southwood taking the first lead. Alivia Pershing would get the game started, converting a three-point play before Teagan Baer made it 3-2. Northfield led 5-4 after a Laney Haupert three before points from Hali Pershing, Ella Chambers and Lola Winer put the Knights up 9-5. Faith Krom would then answer with a bucket that ignited a 12-0 run by the Norse. Haupert would hit two long balls and score 8 points during the run to put Northfield up 17-9. Hali Pershing would stop the run with two free throws, ending the first quarter with Northfield leading 17-11.

Baer would extend the Norse lead to 19-11 to start the second quarter, with Haupert adding another three before two more Baer buckets as the lead grew to 26-13. The Knights would close the deficit to 28-17 before Brynn Double drained a three at the buzzer to give Northfield a 31-17 lead at the half.

The Knights would increase the pressure to start the third quarter with Winer and Sophia Cline scoring to make it 32-22. After trading points a fifth long ball from Haupert would make it 36-24 before a Cline three and a free throw from Brooke Farr made it 36-28. Another Double three put the Norse lead back to double digits with Baer adding three points to end the quarter with Northfield leading 44-31.

The Knights would make it interesting to start the fourth quarter with a high intensity full court press. Winer would get the first bucket before Hali Pershing scored off a steal. Taylor Haecker would chime in with two steals for buckets and just like that the score was 44-39. The Norse would respond with a buckets from Krom and Baer to make it 49-39 before a Haecker three and a Hali Pershing bucket made it 49-43. Breaking the press, Krom and Haupert would increase the lead to 53-43. Two Hali Pershing free throws made it 53-45 before Krom and Haupert hit for the 57-45 final.

Southwood scoring : Chambers 1, Farr 1, Cline 8, H. Pershing 13, Winer 12, Haecker 7, A. Pershing 3.

Northfield won the junior varsity contest 37-25.
