
The Southwood girls basketball team defeated Manchester 49-36 Friday.
In the first game of a girl/boy double header Southwood and Manchester battled for three quarters before the Knights sealed the win in the fourth. Manchester would grab a 4-0 lead to start the game on buckets from Hadley West and Emma Walker before Hali Pershing and Alivia Pershing tied the score. Again, the Squires would go up by four with a Peyton Ream bucket and free throws from West before the Knights answered with 8 straight. Alivia Pershing would score back-to-back buckets, followed by a steal for a bucket by Hali Pershing and a bucket from Taylor Haecker for a 12-8 lead. Ream would answer with a bucket and a free throw before Ella Chambers drained a three, Elin Betten would score the final bucket of the quarter with Southwood leading 15-12.
The Squires looked as though they might run away with the game to start the second quarter, going on a 14-3 run to open a 26-16 lead. Four different players scored during the run with Walker and Ream each scoring twice. The second run of the quarter came from the Knights, scoring the last 8 points of the quarter. Sophia Cline would be deadly from the free throw line before Lola Winer hit at the buzzer. Manchester led 26-24 at the half.
Southwood would flex their muscle to start the third quarter. Winer would hit, followed by two buckets from Hali Pershing and one from Cline to grab a 33-26 lead. Walker would stop the run, followed by Betten to make it 33-30. The two teams would trade points the remainder of the quarter with Southwood leading 39-34 after three.
The Southwood defense came up big in the fourth, holding the Squires scoreless until the 2:37 mark. Cline would score the first four points of the quarter, followed by a Hali Pershing steal before Cline hit her 8th and 9th free throws of the game for a 47-34 lead. Betten would hit two free throws to stop the run before the final points came from Alivia Pershing for the 49-36 final.

Manchester won the junior varsity contest 33-22.
