The Manchester Lady Squires hosted a soccer tournament on Saturday, taking the field twice and putting together two strong team performances.
Manchester opened the day at 9 a.m. against Canterbury in a hard-fought matchup. The two teams battled back and forth throughout the game, with the Lady Squires working hard to create opportunities on the offensive end while staying organized defensively. Canterbury was able to capitalize on a couple of Manchester mistakes, while the Squires struggled to find the finishing touch on their own opportunities. Despite a strong overall team effort, Manchester fell 2-0.
The Lady Squires responded in a big way in their second game of the day, defeating Garrett 7-0. Manchester controlled possession for the majority of the game and consistently pressured the Garrett defense with numerous shots and offensive attacks. The Squires’ offense hustled, connected passes, and worked together to create scoring opportunities, while the defense shut down Garrett’s attack on the other end.
Ava Sautter led the scoring with an impressive four goals, while Aeryn Klose added two goals and two assists. Raimi Vawter found the back of the net for another goal. Rachel Eberly, Elin Betten, and Allie Egolf each added an assist.
Betten and Egolf set the tone in the middle of the field, helping Manchester control possession, win balls, and build the attack throughout the game.
Brooklynn Grimes played both games in net for the Lady Squires and came up with several outstanding saves throughout the tournament. She capped off the day by earning the shutout against Garrett.
