Lady Knights Come Back Falls Short
The Southwood Lady Knights would play large periods of great basketball, but a 4 minute lapse to close the first half would create too big of a deficit to overcome, falling to Eastbrook 41-36.
The Knights would not allow a field goal by Eastbrook until 4 minutes into the 2nd quarter. Unfortunately, they allowed the LadyPanthers best player too many free looks as she would score 13 points in a 4 minute span.
Midway through the 3rd period, Southwood trailed 33-16 when a tremendous comeback started. The Knights would not allow a field goal the final 12 minutes of play, gradually chipping away at the lead. With 34 seconds remaining, the Knights would pull to 36-39. After two missed free throws by Eastbrook, Southwood had 1 final attempt to tie, which did not happen. Eastbrook closed with 2 FT to clinch.
Coach West quote “A tremendous effort by our girls to fight back into the contest. We forced a bunch of turnovers and defended well. We allowed their best player to beat us; can’t allow her to get hot at the end of the first half like we did. And free throws were probably the ultimate deciding factor. Eastbrook was 20-26, we were 7-21. A lot of positives, but back to work tomorrow to continue improving. Very proud of our fight to come back, stings to fall short. Hopefully motivation to move forward.”
