Knights Upset #1

The Southwood Knights put on a quite a performance Saturday as they upset 3A, #1 Northwestern 58-57.

The Knights would lead most of the game, grabbing a 5-2 lead in the first on a three from Gabe Lloyd and a bucket from Dallas Holmes. Carson Rich and Holmes would build the lead to 11-5 with each hitting one more time in the quarter for a 15-11 lead after one.

The Knights would find a mismatch in the second, giving the ball to Rich and turning him loose. Southwood would score the first 12 points of the quarter with Rich accounting for 10 of them. Brayden Barney had the other 2 points. The Knights led 27-11 when the Tigers scored 8 straight to make it 27-19. Southwood would answer the Northwestern run with a 8-4 run to increase their lead to 35-23 and led 35-25 at the half.

Jackson Simons would be the go to guy in the third as he hit twice to maintain the 10 point lead before Northwestern made a move. The Tigers would score 6 straight to make it 42-40 before two Simons free throws. The Knights lead was cut to 44-41 after three.

Northwestern would hit the first bucket of the fourth quarter to make it 44-43 when Holmes drained a three and was followed by a Simons bucket and a three from Lloyd to open a 52-43 lead. With the Knights clinging to a 56-52 lead with 1:40 left a bogus technical foul was called on Southwood. The Tigers would hit one free throw and follow that with two straight buckets to take their first lead at 57-56 with less than a minute to go. The Knights would miss a shot that was rebounded by Northwestern before turning the ball over and giving Southwood another shot. Dallas Holmes would throw up a shot and follow it to rebound and put back in with 8.7 left and a 58-57 lead. The Tigers would rush down the floor, missing the shot and Simons rebounding before being fouled with 1.2 left. Simons would miss both free throws, the second on purpose before the Northwestern full court desperation shot failed and the Knights upset the #1 team in the state 58-57.
