NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Manchester men’s tennis team dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to visiting Anderson on Wednesday evening in Heartland Collegiate Atlhletic Conferecnce action.

The Spartans held a 2-1 advtange following doubles action. Connor Eichenauer and Isaac Miller defeated Bradley Rothaar and David Hockett 8-1 at the No. 1 flight. Andrew Kibler and Dalton Bailey paired for an 8-6 victory at the No. 3 slot.

In singles play, Eichenauer battled to a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win at the No. 1 position. Isaac Miller outlasted Dane Houston in three sets, winning 6-7 (6-8), 6-2, 6-3.

The Spartans (3-8, 1-5 HCAC) will look for an HCAC road win on Friday April 19 at Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati. Match time is set for Noon.


Manchester Softball Drops HCAC Series to Defiance
NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. – The Defiance College Yellow Jackets took a pair of Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference games against the host Manchester Spartans on Wednesday afternoon. Defiance swept a key conference doubleheader, earning wins of 8-7 and 17-15.

Game 1 – Defiance 8, Manchester 7

Defiance bolted out to an early lead after scoring at least one run in each of the first four innings.

Manchester managed to battle back against the Yellow Jackets and nearly overcame a 7-0 deficit. The Spartans scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to claw within three. In the bottom of the fifth, Makenzi Nyland (Avon, Ind. / Avon) hit a two-run home run to left that drew Manchester within a run, 7-6.

After a Defiance insurance run in the top of the seventh, the Spartans once again rallied and nearly stole a walk-off victory Haley Perez (Portage, Ind. / Portage) singled down the line in left, scoring Zoie Penn (Clinton, Ind./ Riverton Parke) from second, which drew Manchester within a run at 8-7. The Yellow Jackets managed to record the final out of the ball game with a pair of Spartans on base, hanging on for a one-run win.

Sydney Thompson (Logansport, Ind. / Logansport) led the Spartans with three hits in four trips to the plate. Alexis Mokos (Cedar Lake, Ind. / Hanover Central) and Katelynn Skeens (Gas City, Ind. / Mississinewa) both tallied two hits. Makenzi Nyland had three RBI in game one.

Game 2 – Defiance 17, Manchester 15

Both teams traded offense blows in the second contest as the pair combined for 32 runs on 39 hits.

Defiance had innings of eight and seven runs, while Manchester had two, six-run innings in a contest that two hours and 34 minuntes. Both teams combined for seven home runs.

Defiance College led 9-2 after after the top of the second inning. Manchester then scored the game’s next 13 runs to take a 15-9 lead. The Defiance bats could not be cooled as the Yellow Jackets scored the final eight runs of the contest to claim a wild, 17-15 victory.

For Manchester, both Miranda Boggs (Frankfurt, Ind. / Frankfurt) and Alexis Mokos hit home runs. Mokos went 3-4 and drove in three runs. Boggs also tallied three hits and drove in a pair. Haley Perez went 4-5 with two RBI. Sydney Thompson drove in three runs. Six Spartans had two or more hits.

Kalin Hubble hit two home runs for Defiance College.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 18-12, 7-3 HCAC on the season. Manchester moved to 10-14, 4-4 HCAC. Manchester is scheduled to play at Clavin College tomorrow in Michigan beginning at 3:30 p.m.
