The Wabash boys soccer team defeated Maconaquah 1-0 Thursday.

It was a game between evenly matched squads that could have gone either way, but some overtime heroics by Sol France made the difference as Wabash earned its fourth TRC victory.

Both teams has periods when they dominated offensively as the momentum swung from one team to another. Maconaquah’s biggest threat came in the first half when a shot deflected off the crossbar and hit the side post before re-entering the field of play. Wabash generated plenty of scoring chances in both halves as Kolton Wilson’s throw-ins created multiple scoring chances.

However, the game remained scoreless at the end of regular time. In the first overtime period, Wabash established possession and kept the pressure on the Maconaquah defense. A rearranged Wabash front line in the overtime period received plenty of support from Alvaro Martinez and Spencer Stout who put in critical minutes in midfield late in the game. The Wabash pressure paid dividends in the 90th minute when the ball fell to the feet of Solomon France at the top of the 18. France settled the ball and fired a shot past the keeper into the left corner of the goal. The Wabash defense had to hold on for the last 3 minutes as Maconaquah made a concerted effort to get an equalizer before time expired—but to no avail. Final score: Wabash 1 Maconaquah 0.

Wabash is now atop the TRC at 4-1. They are 7-3-1 overall. Wabash will close out conference play on Monday when they travel to North Miami for a 5:30 kickoff.
