A day after having a five-game winning streak snapped at Mississinewa, the Manchester Boys Varsity Soccer team got back in the win column with a 5-1 victory over Fort Wayne South Side.

The Squires struggled for most of the first half against South Side’s strong possession style soccer, finally giving up a goal with 6 minutes remaining in the half.

During halftime, Squire senior captains Trevor Heath and Kolby Haecker gave impassioned speeches to their teammates and the Squires came out strong in the second half. Liam York and Diego Munoz switched positions in the midfield, allowing York more space to work on the right side, and at the 32 minute mark, he scored his first goal of the season. Meanwhile, Munoz did an excellent job of distributing the ball to the offense and assisting on defense. Three more goals followed for Manchester in the next ten minutes. Michael Ortiz scored on a long pass from defender Trevor Heath, Ortiz added another goal on his own, and Tyler McLain scored a goal, assisted by Riley Shock. With just a couple minutes left in the game, McLain scored his second goal of the evening, assisted by Ortiz.

While the offense piled on goals, it should be noted that the Squire defenders were also extremely effective. The regular back line of Heath, Dylan Hernandez, Traceson Gearhart, and Evan Martynowicz, with goalkeeper Kolby Haecker behind them and defensive midfielder Riley Shock in front of them, played as a strong and cohesive unit.

The Squires face TRC opponent Maconaquah next Monday.
