The Blackford Bruins visited Honeywell Park to play the Wabash Apache Tennis team. In what was the regular season finale for both teams, the Apaches found success at each position and posted a dominant 5-0 team win.

First off the courts for the Apaches was the 1 doubles duo of Baker and Long. Paired up again this week, the duo has played well as was the case today. Behind stong serving and groundstrokes, Long and Baker grabbed the first point for the Apaches winning 6-1, 6-2.

Next off the courts was Eli Mattern, playing and winning at 3 singles. Mattern again playing a fast paced power game was able to win the match handily 6-0, 6-2, provding another point for the Apaches.

2 doubles won their match with a 6-0, 6-3 score. Derek Reed and Ashton Coffman started strong, not giving up a game in set 1. Set 2 became a bit tighter, as the Blackford team put together a sting of 3 straight games. Reed and Coffman settled back into a solid rythm and pulled out the match.

Alex Dinkins at 2 singles started strong taking a lead in set 1, but back came Crabtree of Blakford making it tight and even leading before Dinkins took control to win set 1 7-5. Set 2 was all Dinkins. moving better and more aggressive at the net, Alex moved on to a 6-2 second set win.

The closest match was played at 1 singles. Nicholas Ewing, on his senior night, started a bit amped and found himself in a 1-4 hole. Ewing found his grove behind a very solid serve and playing high percentge tennis and took set 1 with a game score of 7-5. Set 2 was more of the same for Ewing leading to a 2nd set win with a score of 6-4, sealing the Apaches 5-0 team win.

In JV action, Coltyn Seller won two matches 8-1 and 8-0. Dylan Pence pulled out a win 8-2, and Nick Perkins won 8-2.

Coach Mattern shared, “This was a good team win for us at both the varsity and jv levels. Tonight was a good night for the program as well, as we celebrated our 1 senior, Nicholas Ewing. Nicholas has been an important part of our program. Sticking with us through a tough year 2019, and being an important part of our rebuilding efforts these past two. Nicholas is a good tennis player and even a better person.”

Wabash’s overall record moves to 7-12 on the season. Wabash will host Bethany Christian, Taylor, and South Adams on Saturday in the Wabash Invite.
