A large crowd turned out to watch Manchester tennis face big school tennis power Fort Wayne Carroll Thursday night.

Manchester’s Sarah Kerlin would drop the first match at 1 singles to a strong player. Soon after, the 1 doubles team of Delani Henderson & Carleigh Blevins tied it up with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Henderson & Blevins started strong getting a 5-0 lead and swapped games for the 6-1 set win. After a slow 1-2 second set start, the Squire duo ran off 5 straight games with excellent strategies and net play. At 2 singles Myla Crozier would remain undefeated (12-0) on the season with a hard fought 6-4,7-5 victory. Crozier also started strong with a 3-0 and 4-1 lead but things got tight before she closed out the set, 6-4. The start of set two leaned Carroll’s way as Crozier fell behind 0-3 and 1-4 before rallying through many long deuce games to even up the set 5 all. Crozier then played two gritty games of all out hustle and focus to win 7-5. Needing just one more team win, the longest matches of the night were still on court.

At 2 doubles, Addison Brubaker and Hailey Krom dropped several long back and forth games and the opening set. The duo didn’t give up in set two despite a 1-2 start. Up 4-3 they played great tennis to win the final 2 games and set two 6-3. Meanwhile at 3 singles, Bethany Penrod began to slowly figure out her opponent after a slow start. After over an hour, Penrod forced a tiebreaker and played it well, winning 7 points to 3 for the 7-6 set win. Set two was back and forth until Penrod lost two close games at 4-4 to drop set two 4-6. Back to 2 doubles, the Manchester’s Brubaker & Krom would narrowly miss several game points and fall behind before losing 2-6 after nearly 3 hours of play! With the team score tied 2-2, Bethen Penrod was locked into an epic match. Again most games went to deuce many times before someone would win by 2 points. The middle of the set rolled Carroll’s way and a 2-5 deficit for Penrod. But Bethany didn’t give up winning 3 straight games to tie it 5-5. Unfortunately the final two games didn’t quite finish the comeback as the 3 ½ hour match ended in defeat. Bethany gave it everything she had!.

Coach Eichenauer and Briner were very proud of the team’s effort and growth. “Despite the first team loss of the year, this was exactly the close, competitive match our team needed,” remarked Coach Eichenauer. “We improved tonight!”

Manchester JV again showed its strength and depth winning 4 of 6 JV matches. Ava Baker was the lone singles victor (8-4) using well placed shots to counter her opponents power. Baker closed out the final 3 games to seal the win. Manchester JV swept the doubles action with Katie Jenkins & Ella Bradley winning again. Sophie Anglin & Haley Betten kept getting better as they won 8-0 showing great hustle and determination. Finally, newcomers Marley Bellinger and Maggie Onderko-White continued their quick learning of tennis as they dominated 8-2. Manchester JV pushes their outstanding season record to 10-1.
