Manchester’s dream season came to an end at Peru against Peru in the sectional finals Saturday morning. Manchester won one doubles by forfeit which keeps the undefeated team of Delani Henderson and Carleigh Blevins alive in the state doubles tournament, likely playing at Culver Academies next Tuesday. The second point was earned by Manchester’s two doubles team of Addison Brubaker and Hailey Krom as they dominated 6-1,6-1 with excellent doubles strategies including strong net volleys and big passing shots. Peru took one singles, however, Sarah Kerlin made it exciting in set two as she took a 3-2 lead on Peru’s all state player before losing a competitive 0-6,3-6 match. The team match came down to Manchester’s two star freshmen. One week ago Bethany Penrod surprised at 3 singles to upset Peru and win the conference title for Manchester. Today it was Peru winning. Down 0-3, Penrod would make it 3-4 and almost evened the score at 5-5. Instead a set one loss of 4-6 was followed by a 2-6 defeat. Myla Crozier tried to avenge her only loss of the season, a three setter on May 10 to Peur. Crozier fell behind 0-3,1-4,2-5 before getting hot and going up 6-5. At 6-6, Myla lost in a close 5-7 point tiebreaker, and then dropped a hard fought set two to Peru 2-6. Manchester ends the team season with a 16-2 record and the Three Rivers Conference Title with a perfect 8-0 mark. Manchester tennis looks to advance the one double team of Delani Henderson and Carleigh Blevins deep into the doubles state tournament next week.
