Knights Hold Off Blackford Fourth Quarter Surge

The Southwood boys opened their season, holding on to defeat Blackford 74-67 Tuesday.

Bryce Wilcox and Griffin Chambers would do all the scoring for the Knights in the first quarter with Wilcox dumping in 10 points as Southwood trailed 17-16 after one.

The Knights would grab control in the second when Wilcox hit two free throws that started a 8-0 run for a 24-17 lead. Caleb Wyatt and Dalton Barney would also score during the run. Up 24-19 Jaret Denney would hit, following by a three point play from Wilcox to give Southwood a 29-19 lead at the half.

Barney would score the first five points of the third quarter as the Knights built their lead to 44-27. At 44-30 Wyatt would start a 9-0 run as the lead grew to 53-30. Southwood led 57-34 after three.

Things were looking good for the Knights in the fourth, leading 67-40 when the wheels fell off and Blackford exploded. With 4:40 left the Bruins would score 20 straight points and with a minute and a half left had cut the Southwood lead to 67-60. Wilcox would stop the run with a bucket as the Knights held on for the 74-67 win.

The Southwood junior varsity trailed for three quarters before out scoring Blackford 19-4 in the fourth quarter for a 51-42 win.
