15 Tigers cruise past Warriors 93-61

Peru is playing host for the 2023 Beef O’ Bradys Miami County Holiday Tournament presented by Logansport Savings Bank.

Peru entered this year’s tournament as a 13-time champion over the 15 years it has been played including the last 10 in a row.

The Tigers drew county rival North Miami in the first round in a non-conference match-up.

Peru won the tip and looked to push the pace from the jump. They forced North Miami into 13 turnovers in the first quarter leading to a 27-12 lead after 1.

In quarter 2, the Tigers didn’t force as many turnovers, but they looked to run every chance they got. Junior Gavin Eldridge chipped in 11 of his 18 first-half points in this quarter with 3 3-pointers as Peru outscored the Warriors by 15, 35-20, pushing the lead to 30 at the half.

The Tigers started the 3rd a little sluggish, as North Miami went on a little run to cut the lead down to 20 about halfway through. Peru then responded and ended up outscoring the Warriors by 1 in the quarter.

The Tigers were then able to push the lead to the 35-point mark with about seven minutes remaining in the game enacting the running clock. About halfway through the last stanza, the Tigers were able to empty their bench.

The win moves the Tigers to 6-2 (3-0 TRC) on the season. They are back in action tomorrow night 20 minutes after the end of the girls’ championship game, approx. 8 p.m. against south county rival Maconaquah for the championship.

Tigers fall in 1st round of Holiday Tournament 66-44

The Peru Tigers (1-13) faced off with the North Miami Warriors (5-5) Wednesday afternoon.

A trey from senior Kaylene Kirk started the Tigers out on top early, however, North Miami’s Kaiden Hanley returned fire, nailing a three to tie it up. Hanley’s three pointer initiated 13 unanswered points for the Warriors.

Sophomore Addison Butt’s three pointer finally ended Peru’s offensive drought and helped start a 12-4 Tiger run in the final minutes of the first quarter. Peru trailed 17-15 entering the second quarter.

Both squads traded buckets back and forth throughout the second quarter, marking the Tigers behind by 1 with 4:30 to go in the half. NM’s Hanley banked in a three to increase their lead, but a drive and bucket by Kirk cut the Warrior lead to 2 with 3:06 to go. North Miami pulled ahead by 9 to end the first half of the game.

The Tigers were outscored 31-18 in the second half and ultimately couldn’t get into an offensive groove. The final score at Tig-Arena was 66-44, with the Warriors on top.

Peru’s scoring came from a leading Kaylene Kirk’s 13 points. Sophomores Addison Robbins and Addison Butt each had 10 points. Freshman Madalyn Gatliff tossed in 6, junior Sydney Azbell had 4, and senior Brooklyn Garner had 1 point.

Robbins (6) and Junior Marieona Mason (4) combined for 10 assists.

Azbell, Mason, and Robbins all had a pair of steals.

Leading on the boards for the Tigers was Robbins (6), Kirk (5), and Butt (4).

Peru looks on to another county rematch as they take on the Maconaquah Braves tomorrow, December 28, 2023 in the consolation game of the 2023 Miami County Holiday Tournament. Tip off is slated for Noon in Tig-Arena.
