Golden Eagles win exciting opening round sectional game defeating Maconaquah by 1 point!

Wow! Just wow! Oak Hill Varsity Boys Basketball wins a buzzer beater game in the first round of sectional defeating state ranked Maconaquah 67-66 to avenge a 28point loss to the Braves earlier in the season! A grind it out type of a game throughout, the Golden Eagles found themselves down by 1 after the first quarter. In the second quarter Ball of Maconaquah went off for 14 points and the Golden Eagles were out scored by seven taking an eight point deficit into halftime. In the third quarter the Golden Eagles came out with a lot of resolve and tightened up the defense and scored 19 points themselves to take a one point lead going into the final frame. The fourth quarter saw the lead go back-and-forth several times with Maconaquah getting a lead by five with about 3:00 minutes to go. The Golden Eagles chipped away and were down by one point with less than 30 seconds left in the game after Ball, who is the state’s leading scorer hit a mid court jumper for his 33rd point. Oak Hill took a time out with five seconds left and went out to execute their final play of the game. The ball found R. J. Shugart at the top left part of the key where he made a move and got around a defender and shot a three point shot that went in with 1.9 seconds left on the clock. With 1.9 seconds left Maconaquah advance the ball up past half court where a Ball got a shot off that fell just short and the Golden Eagles came away with the huge victory! Everyone that stepped on the floor for the Eagles had major contributions to help seal the big team victory! R. J. Shugart hit six three-pointers, including the shot at the end, for the game hitting at least one in every quarter to finish with a team high and career high 24 points.He also had two assists and three rebounds. The only other Golden Eagle in double digits was Levi Trexler with 10 points and about 10 rebounds, as he was huge on the glass for Oak Hill. Jace Tonagel had eight points and about eight assists. Jackson Lamb had eight points and numerous offensive rebounds for the Golden Eagles keeping the ball alive for the offense. Ty Fagan had six big points down the stretch for three or four rebounds as well for Oak Hill. Colin Middlesworth had five points hitting a huge three point shot in the fourth quarter to help keep the score close. Trenton Sweet had three points and three rebounds and a lot of hustle on defense to help the Eagles. Ryan Lawson also had some good minutes for the Eagles hitting three of four free throws for his three points. And Luke Elzinga got in and got a big stop towards the end of the second quarter for the Eagles on defense. What an exciting game and atmosphere! Thank you Oak Hill fans for traveling over and supporting your Golden Eagles! Come out again Friday night around 7:30 as the Eagles will face the winner of the Norwell/Peru game at Mississinewa in the semifinals.
