Manchester Boys Runner Up At Northwood

The Manchester boys soccer team won a shoot out over Western before falling to Northwood in the Northwood Invite Saturday.

The Manchester Boys Varsity soccer team played Western High School to a 3-3 tie in their opening game at the Northwood Invitational before prevailing in a penalty kick shoot out 4-2 to take the win.

The Squires came out strong in the first half, tallying the first two goals of the game. Seven minutes into the first half, Michael Ortiz scored a goal, assisted by Riley Shock. Eight minutes later it was Tyler McLain’s turn to score, assisted by Ortiz. But Western countered with two goals of their own late in the half.

In the second half, Manchester gave up an own goal to allow Western to take the lead, but the Squires didn’t quit and at the 25 minute mark Trevor Heath pushed a long pass up the right sideline to Ortiz who chased the ball to the endline where he contolled it before cutting hard to the goal and blasting it past the goalkeeper. For the final twenty minutes the game flowed back and forth with neither team able to finish.

Once the clock ran out, the game went immediately to penalty kicks. Liam York made the first PK for Manchester and Western made their first. McLain’s attempt on the second PK was stopped, while Western made their second. Then Dylan Hernandez made the third, while Kolby Haecker stopped Western’s third, Ortiz made the fourth, while again Haecker stopped Western’s fourth, and finally Nathaniel Miller sealed the win by making the fifth Manchester PK attempt.

The Squires faced a tough NorthWood team in the final of the NorthWood Invitational. NorthWood scored a goal mid-way through the first half to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, again at about the midpoint of the half, NorthWood tallied another goal on a free kick from the right side that was headed in. With 15 minutes to go, Manchester got a goal on direct free kick from about 20 yards out when Nathaniel drove his shot into the upper left corner of the goal.
