Apaches Open Season Defeating Defending State Champs

The Wabash Apaches opened their season hosting defending state champion Oak Hill Wednesday, defeating the Eagles 53-43.

The Apaches would grab a 2-0 lead on a Blake Gribben bucket before Konnor Kabe tied the score. Two free throws from Trenton Daughtry and a kabe bucket left the score tied when the Apaches made a move. Logan Vander Velden would start a 6-0 run for Wabash with Elijah Vander Velden hitting for a 10-4 lead. Landry Ozman made it 10-6 before a Daughtry three opened a 13-6 lead. Tahj Johnson would then hit, followed by a Logan Vander Velden bucket to give Wabash a 15-8 lead after one.

Kabe and Bradey Evans would hit for Oak Hill to start the second quarter and slice the Wabash lead to 15-13 when Daughtry hit two free throws followed by a Dereck Vogel three to make it 20-13. At 20-14 Elijah Vander Velden and Daughtry would increase the Apaches lead to 25-14 before Johnson and Kabe made it 25-17. Wabash would lead 29-19 at the half.

The Apaches would get a free throw each from Daughtry and Kallen Kelsheimer to start the third quarter and lead 31-19 before Kabe hit two free throws, followed by a three from Kody Dubois to cut the deficit to 31-24. Wabash would answer with the last 8 points of the quarter, getting two buckets from Gribben to lead 39-24 with a quarter left.

Most of the fourth quarter was spent with the Eagles chasing the Apaches as Wabash went to a slow down offense. Oak Hill was forced to foul with the Apaches hitting 10 free throws in the quarter to hold on for the 53-43 win.

Wabash was led by Trenton Daughtry with 19 points and 6 assists. Elijah Vander Velden had 10 points and 5 rebounds. Logan Vander Velden had 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Dereck Vogel added 7 points, Kallen Kelsheimer 1, Blake Gribben 6, Jared Holley 2.

The Wabash junior varsity fell to Oak Hill 50-54.

Scoring : Cole 3, Reed 8, Boggs 15, Walter 11, Leland 12. The totals are a point short and not sure where.

The Wabash C team fell to Oak Hill 24-40.
