The Northfield and Southwood softball teams opened their season Monday playing each other with the Norse scoring a run in the bottom of the seventh to defeat the Knights 4-3.
Northfield would grab a 2-0 leading scoring solo runs in the second and third. In the second Addi Baker would lead off drawing a walk and was followed by an Abby Hunter single that chased Baker home.
In the third Emma Hoover would reach on a one out error before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. With runners on second and third Ally Keaffaber would single with Hoover being held up at third before scoring on a wild pitch to grab a 2-0 lead.
The Knights would cut the Norse lead in half in the top of the fourth. Makenna Pace led off drawing a walk and advanced to second on an error. With Pace on third with one out Keagan Simpson would single to make it 2-1.
The game would remain 2-1 until the 5th when the Norse made it 3-1. With two outs Fayth Leming would draw a walk and advance to third when Keaffaber reach on an error. The Knights would intentionally walk Baker to load the bases before Leming scored on a passed ball for a 3-1 lead.
It was 3-1 in the top of the seventh and the Knights were down to their last out when they made some noise. With two outs Ashley Smith would reach on a Norse error. Pace would follow with a walk before a wild pitch put runners on second and third. Tabitha Thomas would then single to left, chasing home both runners to tie the score at 3. The Norse would answer in the bottom of the inning when Keaffaber led off with a walk. Baker would follow with a single before Hunter drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. Kenzie Baer would then hit a blooper between first and second that a diving Ashley Smith couldn’t come up with, with Keaffaber racing home for the winning run.
