Wabash Boys tennis took the long ride to Fremont HS Saturday August 20th for the Fremont Invite.

The format of the invite leads to an overall team champion and champions at each position. Wabash went 0-3 on the day in head to head team contests, however there were some bright spots for the young Apache netters as three athletes earned the varsity letters with wins.

Earning a letter for a win at 1 doubles was Cooper Long and Dominic Baker. Coach Mattern said, “1 doubles players well today. Although they went 1-2 on the day, they competed in every match. The growth from Thursday’s match at Madison Grant to the last match on Saturday against Ft. Wayne Snyder shows great promise from both Coop and Dom. Few 1 dubs teams are made up of a freshman and sophomore. Our guys are competing with much more experienced players and showing they belong. Wins will come for these two for sure.” Freshman Eli Mattern went 2-1 on the day, earning his varsity letter and finishing as the runner up of the 3 singles individual tournament. Coach Mattern was pleased with his performance. “Eli is a competitor for sure. His work over the summer has paid off and he is playing well. His lone loss was a 5-7, 5-7 marathon match in which his conditioning was more of a deciding factor than his play. We look for many more wins from Eli this year at the 3 singles spot and also at 1 doubles when he plays in that position.’ Wabash was also competitive at 2 singles with Alex Dinkins continuing to improve daily.

Overall, the performance was good and the team as a whole continues to improve with more match wins and closer set scores in the losses than the past two years at Fremont. “Weather was a fun obstacle for all teams today as delays and stoppage of play challenged the althletes to stay focused. The downtime was tough for us and truly we lost some momentum each time leading to a slow restart. Another good learning experience for our kids. This young team is finding it’s way and learning to compete. Our next challenge is to learn to win as a team.” Mattern shared.
