Wabash Tennis Gets Road Win At Eastern

On a spectacular evening for tennis, Wabash Tennis traveled to Eastern HS and pulled out a 4-1 win over the Comets.

Ewing at 1 singles and Mattern at 3 singles had solid 2 set wins. The remaining 3 matches were three set thrillers with tie breakers played in each position.

At 1 singles, Nicholas Ewing had a 6-2, 6-4 win playing a steady game, keeping the ball in play and limiting unforced errors.

2 singles was a thrilling 3 set marathon match. Alex Dinkins lost the first set 5-7, then stormed back to win the second set 6-2 utlizing solid approach shots and agressive net play. The third set was back and forth as Alex fell behind 5-2 but found the fortitude to come back and tie the match at 5-5. A tie breaker became the decider of the match at 6-6. Lapp from Eastern was able to pull out the tie brreaker 7-5 to win what was a great math for the spectators.

Eli Mattern had a dominant win at 3 singles 6-1, 6-0 over Farkas from Eastern. Utlizing a strong and well placed serve, Eli was able to control the points from the outset while serving. His return game was equally effective using a mix of power and finess at the net to put away shots in a highly efficient manner.

1 doubles was also a three set thriller including two tie breakers as Eastern found their groove after a 6-1 loss to Cooper Long and Dominc Baker in set one. Long and Baker dropped a highly competitve set two 6-7 after losing in the tie breaker. Moving to set three it was back and forth. Long played exceptionally well placing the ball leading to easy put aways for Baker in set 3. Tied 6-6, the dou headed to a tie breaker to decide the match. Digging in and staying focused, Wabash 1 dubs was able to win the tie breaker 7-3 to finalize the match.

2 doubles also found themselves locked into a tight match. Ashton Coffman and Troy Guenin-Hodson started strong with a 6-3 first set win. Set 2 got tight and the 2 dubs team found themselves in a battle. Moving to a tie breaker to deicde set 2 after knotting the score 6-6, Coffman and Guenin-Hodson fell in the tie breaker 4-7 conceding the set to square up the match. Wabash 2 dubs was able to recompose themselves and win the decisive set 6-3 to complete the match.

In JV action, Derek Reed came back from injury and played very well winning his match in a proset 8-0. Competing for Wabash JV at doubles was TJ Fritter and Colton Sellers losing in a tight match 6-8. Also at doubles JV was Dillon Pence and Nick Perkins falling in a tight 5-8 match.

The Apaches are now 3-7 on the year.
