Apaches XC Wins Sectional Title

The Wabash High School boys cross country team found themselves in a hard fought battle with a very talented Oak Hill team Saturday in the sectional meet.

With a strong pack the Apaches placed all 7 runners in the top 20 and secured the victory. In the front of the pack was Kaden Vogel (3rd), Dave Ford (4th), and Jonas Church (5th) who all finished within one second of each other. Isaiah Cordes was the next runner to cross the line for Wabash coming in 10th. Chase Howard (12th), Brett Shull (13th), and Jace Bullins (17th) closed out a remarkable 7 runners for the Apaches. Next up is the regional meet held at IWU.

The Lady Apaches competed to keep their season alive Saturday morning at the Marion Sectionals hosted at Indiana Wesleyan University. The girls toed the line with 63 athletes, 9 complete teams and 11 schools represented to run for their chance to qualify for the regionals. The Apaches took off with their tribe, running hard their first mile with all of them being roughly 30 seconds ahead of their goal pace. Into the 2 mile, the girls maintained their places and began to surge forward to close gaps that would affect their third mile. Being faster than their goal times at the two made for a strong finish into the third mile. The girls rounded the last curve, knowing that they were fighting for everything they’ve worked for in the past 10 weeks worth of training, summer miles, and horrible tan lines. Each girl crossed the finish line with a new career PR and placement that left four of the girls being individual qualifiers. This was also the first time in a decade that the girls had a scoring sectional team.

First for the HS lady Apaches was our junior, Calisen Kugler, running in with a career PR of 21:21 and taking 12th place overall. Following Kugler was freshman, Haylee Friend, coming in 19th place with a career PR time of 21:57. Ivy Beamer, our team sophomore, raced to the finish in 32nd place and running a career PR time of 23:19.7. Raegan Jones, a freshman, followed in right on the heels of Beamer with a career PR of 23:19.8 and placing 33rd. These top four ladies placed high enough to qualify for regionals! Coming in only one place away from qualifying was freshman Maya Howard. Howard finished in 39th place with a career PR time of 24:20. Next was freshman Ava Bishir. Bishir came in with a career PR time of 24:33 and taking 41st place. Our team senior, Grace La Mar, crossed the line in her last high school race with a career PR time of 25:40 and taking 47th place.

Northfield and Southwood also competed in the sectional.
