Tigers top Braves 5-3

Peru hosted south county rival Maconaquah on Wednesday in a Three Rivers Conference contest.

Ian Potts took the mound for the Tigers to start the game and only required 8 pitches to retire the Braves in order, for a quick inning of work. Peru wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom half. Gavin Eldridge and Potts both reached on a pair of walks. Reis Bellar singled to left center field driving in Eldridge for the first Tiger run. Following a couple of strikeouts, Jackson Rogers roped a single to center driving in both Potts and Bellar, giving the Tigers a 3-0 early lead.

Maconaquah was able to get a solo baserunner in the top of inning number 2, but Potts struck out the side to end the threat. Peru drew 3 walks in the bottom half to load the bases with only 1 out, but Tel Smith was caught stealing home on a wild pitch and a strikeout ended the inning with no damage being done.

The Braves had a lone baserunner in the 3rd on an error but left him stranded at first. The Tigers started the bottom half with a leadoff walk, but he was picked off 3 batters later to end the inning.

Maconaquah went 3 up and 3 down in the 4th inning. Peru managed to get a couple of runners on in their half. Bryce Hill reached on an error and Eldridge singled to center. Hill was thrown out trying to score on the play for the final out of the inning.

Potts lost his no-hit bid with 2 outs in the 5th inning when he gave up a single. Potts drew a leadoff walk and advanced to 2nd base on an error on the pitcher with an errant throw on a pickoff attempt. Bellar moved Potts to 3rd with a ground out. Jaxson Manriquez hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Potts. Tigers led 4-0.

The Braves finally got on the board in the 6th with 3 straight hits to plate 2 runs and tacked on 1 more on a wild pitch. Peru answered with 1 of its own in the bottom half, Rogers reached on an error to start the inning. Lucas Musser double on a deep drive to left field that hit the base of the wall driving in Rogers. Tigers led 5-3.

Potts came out and faced the first 2 batters of the inning inducing a ground out and a strikeout. Ryne Butt came on in relief and earned the save on 3 pitches with a ground out to 2nd base.

Potts picked up the win going 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 3 runs(all earned) on 4 hits, striking out 8 batters and walking only 2. Butt picked up the save going 1/3 of an inning, with no runs, no hits, no walks, and no strikeouts.

Bellar, Rogers, Eldridge, and Musser(2B) all had hits for the Tigers. Rogers drove in 2, and Potts scored twice on his 3 walks.

The Tigers improved to 15-3(7-0 TRC). They are back in action this weekend as Peru hosts the 18th Miami County Classic. Peru hosts North Miami at 10 am, followed by Maconaquah versus Oak Hill around 12:30 pm. The consolation game is at 4:00 pm and the Championship game is around 6:30 pm. The Peru Bengal Backers will be there for the fans to enjoy as well.

Peru is on the road next week to wrap up their TRC slate with games at North Miami on Monday and Whitko on Tuesday.
